The iconic hotel on Sunset Blvd. has permanently closed

The historical Standard Hotel closed during the Los Angeles County Stay at Home Order to slow the spread of COVID-19 and announced it had permanently shuttered and was up sale on October 2021.

The hotel indefinitely shuttered in January 2022 "due to the restrictions imposed by the California state and city authorities and the safety of our guests and staff," according to a hotel memo. The Standard also closed its other location in West Hollywood at 8300 W. Sunset Blvd.

Stars like Cameron Diaz, Benicio del Toro and Leonardo DiCaprio helped fund the location to open, the Times reports, and has been a popular spot over the years for celebrities like Uma Thurman, Jennifer Lopez and Matt Dillon.

Sunset Boulevard offers miles of glitz, glamor, shopping, dining, and nightlife. The Boulevard is famed as being representative of the classic Hollywood lifestyle and has even been the subject of famous films, not the least of which is its namesake film.

It was developed by Andre Balazs Properties. The structure was originally built in 1962 as the Thunderbird Motel, and had become a retirement home when Balazs purchased and remodeled it. Original investors in the Hollywood hotel were Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Benicio del Toro, D'arcy Wretzky and James Iha.

And just like that, The Standard's footprint will disappear from the city. The downtown Los Angeles hotel, famous for its rooftop pool and bar, will shut its doors “indefinitely” on Jan. 22, 2022, according to a recording on the hotel's main phone line.

iBorrow, a nationwide private lender for commercial real estate, has provided financing to Ian Schrager and Ed Scheetz to enable their acquisition of a 139-key hotel property formerly known as the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood, CA.

This ambitious transformation of the former Camden Town Hall Annexe, a 1974 Brutalist structure, into a landmark hotel was achieved through the restoration of the original concrete façade and the addition of three striking storeys.
