In fact, the terminal pretty much doubles as an museum for New Jersey art, anchored by site-specific pieces by Newark-based Ecuadorian painter Layqa Nuna Yawar (a 350-foot mural calledBetween the Future Past, stretching through the arrivals hall and concourse) and artist Karyn Olivier, originally from Trinidad & Tobago (two suspended sculptures, entitledApproach, hanging 50 feet high featuring photos of local landmarks).

“When a major new airport terminal not only brilliantly serves its function but also captures the unique spirit of a place, it becomes a truly civic space,” said Nicholas Baume, Artistic & Executive Director of the nonprofitPublic Art Fund, which commissioned the art with the PANYNJ andMunich Airport NJ.

Local officials agree about the connection. “I’m ecstatic about what I see when I walk into this airport,” Newark MayorRas J. Baraka said. “Why? Because Newark and Elizabeth are predominantly Black and brown and native communities, and when you come into this building, this is what you see, from the artwork to the vendors, to the people who actually did the work themselves, to the people that are working in this building every day from security guards to maintenance folks to the people working on the runway, they represent these communities.”

Thursday’s openingincludes 21 of the 33 gates, serving flights from United, JetBlue, American, Air Canada, and Delta. The remaining gates will open as part of a secondary phase, scheduled for summer 2023.

But it's been a long road—marred by multiple delays—to get to this point. The project started in 2018, with an original target date of one phase opening in 2021 and another in 2022,according to Airline Weekly. The pandemic set things back to a summer 2022 opening, as did the Ukrainian war, as glassworkers working on the terminal’s glass were called off to war,The New York Times reported.
