Did you spot easy to miss clue in Coronation Street that may prove Roy dies? (2024)

Monday (May 27)’sCoronation Streetopened in the prison where Roy Cropper (David Neilson) is being held, accused of the murder of Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) – but there was no sign of Roy.

What we saw instead was liquid spilling on to the floor, before a book dropped to the wet floor, followed by a coffee mug. As the camera moved across the stain on the floor – the coffee looking ominously like blood – there was another detail that suggested Roy may be in deadly danger.

The music playing on the soundtrack was The Lark Ascending by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, a piece which is very significant to Roy.

In 2014 his beloved wife Hayley Cropper (Julie Hesmondhalgh) was diagnosed with untreatable pancreatic cancer. Hayley, a woman who always lived her life on her own terms, made the decision to end her life. This was against Roy’s wishes, as he wanted to have as much time with her as possible, but after a lot of soul searching he realised he had to support her.

In devastatingly sad scenes viewers watched Hayley take a co*cktail of drugs. As she died in Roy’s arms they listened to a CD ofher favourite piece of music – The Lark Ascending. The emotional piece for solo violin and orchestra has frequently topped polls of favourite classical pieces and it had huge emotional impact in this incredibly sad scene.

Does this deliberate echo of the worst moment of Roy’s life, the death of the person who was most precious to him, suggest that Roy could soon be facing his own death?

Also in the prison currently is Griff Reynolds (Michael Condron), the leader of the far right gang that caused mayhem in Coronation Street previously, grooming Max Turner (Paddy Bever) into joining the extremist gang and being behind violent plots including a bomb in the Speed Daal van.

Lauren Bolton’s father was also a member of the gang, and it soon becomes clear that Griff is convinced that Roy is guilty of Lauren’s murder and has decided to take revenge. In ominous scenes on Friday (May 24) we saw Griff hiding a makeshift knife in his cell.

As this special week of episodes continues, the race is on outside the prison to try to clear Roy’s name and get to the bottom of what happened to Lauren on the day she disappeared. While Roy still remains the police’s prime suspect, the recent arrest of Nathan Curtis (Christopher Harper) has put another name in the frame for the attack on Lauren.

Meanwhile, Roy’s defence is currently hanging on a false statement that Bobby (Jack Carroll) made to the police –a story which is about to collapseunder DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers)’s investigations.

Events on the outside of the prison may turn out to be secondary to what’s happening inside, though, as coming episodes will seeGriff trying to press a terrified Roy into a confession– before holding the knife to his throat and telling him to say his last words.

Is Roy about to meet his death? The choice of music would seem to suggest that, sadly, he is.

Away from the choice of music, fans were also quick to spot that the opening scenes of Monday’s episode were more filmic than usual, seemingly filmed using different cameras.

Dunno where you got those fancy cameras from, Corrie, but I hope you sent them back for a full refund. 😬#corrie #coronationstreet
