Should I Take My Barbie Obsessed 6 year Old To See The New Movie? (2024)

You would have to have been living under a rock not to have noticed the hype around the Barbie movie being released on Friday, but will you be bringing your kids to see it?

One mum took to Reddit to ask whether she should bring her daughter, who is Barbie obsessed, to see the highly anticipated flick and the responses were pretty conclusive.

She asked the parenting forum of the site: ‘So my 6 year is old LOVES Barbie. She’s got every Barbie accessory you could think of and the dream houses take up half her room.

‘My husband has already bought tickets for Friday night as a surprise for my daughter. I’ll be the one taking her.’

‘I was so excited and so is she. BUT then I googled it…. It seems like the general consensus is 1) no one knows what the plot really is & 2) this movie is not for children.

The mum went on to explain that she has no problem with her daughter seeing a PG-13 movie and that she has even seen R rated movies as the family loves horror flicks. ‘She totally understands what’s real vs fake, what adult language is and she is not to use it, and we of course limit anything with severe gore or sex. All this to say — should I take her to see Barbie? Am I going to be severely judged for taking her to the movie theatre for this?’

The general consensus was that, no, the Barbie movie is not suitable for children. As a lot of people told the mother that it’s not necessarily unsuitable for younger children but would probably be uninteresting to them. But, as it is PG-13 you can still bring children to see the Barbie movie as long as they have a parent with them.

In Ireland, the age rating is 12A, according to the Irish Film Classification Office, as it has some ‘moderate’ sex and violence and ‘mild’ language. This means that any child under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult over 18 to view it.

However, if you have seen the trailers, it does seem that the movie is more geared toward a teenage or adult audience.

According to the ODEON Cinema, the adult jokes are likely to go over the heads of your children if you choose to bring them. On their website, the cinema says: ‘Based on her animated adventures, you might expect theBarbiemovie age rating to be ‘U’ all day long. ButGreta Gerwigwanted to make a movie with a smart mouth and a satirical edge, which explains why theBarbiemovie has a12A ratingfor ‘moderate innuendo and implied strong language’. Don’t worry: you can bring all your Barbie-loving kids to ODEON, safe in the knowledge the adult jokes will sail straight over their innocent little heads.’

What do you think? Will you be bringing your kids to see the Barbie movie or will you just plan a night out with the gals?
