Summary
Throughout the 19th century the United States maintained several consular posts throughout Colonial British Jamaica, the earliest at Montego Bay and Falmouth dating from 1861. These posts, which were placed to monitor American trade interests in the Caribbean, were all closed by September 1919.

Jamaica became independent on August 6, 1962, remaining a member of the British Commonwealth. The United States recognized Jamaica’s independence on August 16, 1962, with the establishment of the American Embassy at Kingston.
