Can you believe it’s been more than 15 years since the Kardashian-Jenner family first graced our screens?? While Keeping Up With the Kardashians wrapped in 2021, it wasn’t long before the family’s new series The Kardashians debuted on Hulu. As season 3 of The Kardashians kicks off, we took a look at some of the most intense rules the family members—and the hardworking crews who get the shows made—have had to follow when it comes to filming their hit reality series. Like: Did you know that Kris keeps a stack of NDAs by her door?? Or that Kendall has a strict rule about how long she has to date someone before they’re allowed to appear on the show? Seems like we might not get any Bad Bunny appearances in season 3, sorry!

Lots of what we’ve included here are policies that applied to the filming of KUWTK, so it’s TBD whether *all* of these same rules apply to filming The Kardashians—but many seem like they’re def still a thing. We’ve included plenty of tidbits about The Kardashians specifically too, of course.

Here are 54 rules you didn’t know the KarJenners and their teams have to follow while filming their shows.

If You Want to Fly Air Kim, Don't. Touch. Anything.

Kim has joked (?) that passengers on her private plane have to follow rules like "don't breathe" and "don't touch a thing," and has suggested there's a no-shoe rule. When Kendall said she was getting a spray tan shortly before their flight to Milan for Fashion Week, Kim was less than pleased, saying, "You cannot get your spray tan on my cashmere seats."

Kendall's Relationships Must Pass a Milestone Before Her Beau Is on the Show

Back when they were on E!, Kendall reportedly created a rule about her love interests appearing on KUWTK. "Kendall’s always had this rule—she just felt like she had to be with someone for at least a year before she lets them be a part of the show, because she doesn’t always know what people’s intentions are,” KUWTK executive producer Farnaz Farjam explained, via Us Weekly. "That’s why we kind of kept her personal life out of it." Assuming she brought that same rule to Hulu, we might not see much of Bad Bunny this season. Sorry!

Kim Won't Share Much About Kanye on The Kardashians

Though Kim did touch on her divorce from Kanye West on prior seasons of The Kardashians, she purposefully didn't address his ongoing controversies. She said, "I am always super protective of Kanye and not sharing a lot of the negative things that have happened. Just because he is not here doing the show." She's also said doesn't want their children to have to deal with the "real heavy, heavy grown-up sh*t that they are not ready to deal with." That said, it looks like Kim might finally be ready to speak about it in more detail, if The Kardashians season 3 trailer is any indication...

Everyone Is Paid the Same Amount for The Kardashians

The fam made $100 million when they inked their deal with Hulu for The Kardashians, and Khloé told Variety they split their fee evenly because "we're all equals." Assuming that's just the main six cast members, each sister (plus Kris) would be taking home more than 16 million apiece.

...But That Wasn't Always the Case

After Kourtney stepped back from KUWTK, Kimmy and KoKo potentially took home about 50 percent to 60 percent of the family’s current contract, while Kylie and Kendall got the leftovers. To be fair, they were on the show way less.

Kris Jenner Is the Whole Family's Negotiator

I mean, are we surprised?? Speaking about the Hulu deal, Khloé told Variety, "my mom deals with all the negotiating, and we let her do that because it is uncomfortable. She fights like a pit bull. She loves to do it and we let her do it."

They're Allowed to Delete The Kardashians Footage

Fun fact, the cast members are also executive producers on the Hulu show, which means they have some say on what makes the final cut. "Obviously like any human being, they have boundaries so they can decide what stays in, what stays out of the show," executive producer Danielle King explained to Us Weekly. This was NOT the case on KUWTK, where Kris was the only family member who could review footage and have a say in what to cut.

And Kris Definitely Deleted Unflattering Footage

She admitted as much to the Hollywood Reporter in 2017, saying, “I mean, believe me, I’m not going to lie, there’s been times when I’ve walked away from the camera and I’ve got a big bump in my hair and I’m like, ‘Take that out, my hair looks like sh*t.’ I’m too vain to leave really ugly, ugly angles in.”

Everyone on KUWTK Had to Sign an NDA

Kim confirmed as much on Twitter, writing, “Btw NDAs for all!!!! #KUWTK” while live-tweeting the E! show. While there's not much public info about whether the same policies are in place for the Hulu show, it seems pretty likely.

Blac Chyna Shared a Peek at the NDA

During the height of Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian’s drama, ABC News was sent a photograph of the NDA Blac had signed in 2016, wherein she agreed not to disclose anything about anyone in the Kardashian family. So, yeah, they take their privacy seriously.

Ya know, so anyone who walks in can easily sign their rights away, no bigs.

KUWTK Can’t Use Your Pic if You Don’t Sign a Waiver

We found this out when the show blurred a buncha pics of Khloé’s then-boyfriend Tristan Thompson. When fans asked Khloé about it on Twitter, she replied, “We obviously didn’t do anything. He might not have signed a waiver to show those images. Why would I want to blur his face? I’m not hiding his identity LOL.”

This hilarious fact was revealed in a New York Times article about Kris, which described “a production assistant in surgical shoe coverings” who “handed out microphones” as “people wired themselves up through the bottoms of their shirts while Kris invited them into the kitchen for coffee cake.”

A team of professionals works on Kris each day that KUWTK films. Apparently, her assistant says it takes “only” an hour.

And She Required Perfect Lighting at All Times

Kylie told Elle, “I get them done once a week, which isn’t normal.” Meanwhile, Kendall added, “[Kris] would have a nail artist come to the house once a week and she would make us get our nails done. She was like, ‘You are never going to look like you’re not put together.’ So we were always getting them done.”

Nannies Are Almost Never Seen on the Show

A Bunch of Super-Strict Filming Rules the KarJenners Follow (19)

Not sure why (maybe something to do with privacy issues?), but it’s a legit thing. Even when Kourtney and Kim got into an argument about one of Kim's nannies on an episode of KUWTK, the nanny's name was bleeped out.

They Had to Film KUWTK 10 to 12 Hours per Day

A Bunch of Super-Strict Filming Rules the KarJenners Follow (20)

The cameras were basically never not rolling on KUWTK, and the New York Times reported that Kris even had cameras installed on her ceiling—at least as of 2015. Viewers have speculated that the family films for fewer hours on The Kardashians that they did for KUWTK, but no source has officially confirmed this. Producer Danielle King says they have a five-day-a-week shoot schedule, with some flexibility to cover weekends as well.

Going on Location Is a Whole SAGA

The Kardashians usually shoot in their homes, but sometimes, they venture into the real world to capture footage and it’s a whole ordeal. Apparently, the New York Times was meant to accompany Kris to Costco and the trip had to be canceled because “they have to keep up good relations with the businesses where they tape.” Uh…okay then.
